Grey day play

Be forewarned there is female nudity here so if it offends you leave before viewing.

The other day a traveling model from Model mayhem recontacted me about shooting together and this has been a slow month maybe even longer than a month since shooting and I liked a couple of her portfolio pictures and I though, why not? I just had a cancelation on another shoot and I was ready. I do get excited about shoots even a headshot, my wife describes this as nervous but I think of it as anticipation which I think we artists all share. Will I be good enough, will what ever I am planing work, will people laugh at me? They have. Taking photos isn’t a life and death situation unless it is.

As you can read latter in this post how I screwed up during this session. Oh well.

Zi rang my bell 7 minutes before the arranged time, that’s a positive sign which means she’s professional and a smart lady even caught some type o’s in my model release, cool. We talked about makeup well lipstick color which she applied while I pulled down the paper. Then we looked through some clothes I had and made a pile to try.

Beginning with this jacket I don’t remember having, it’s nice to discover something new. I really didn’t need to direct her because she would go from pose after hearing the click of the shutter. I see I should have fixed her face as it looks rough in this pose. I do try and make women look nice, must be something I got from my mother.

Since the lighting is mostly set up I usually turn on and turn off units as needed. Which gets boring and I keep telling myself I need to  get out of this rut. But here I go again.

I don’t think she ever said no to anything I suggested. A lovely pleasant young woman easy to work with.

She did most of the work all I did was plug and unplug things and push the shutter. She had some Shibari rope work in her portfolio and I had asked her if she was up for it. ‘Sure’. She has her own rigger which is a bit intimidating to me the beginner.

This is what I came up with her. I’ve always wanted to do a braided tie like this, I don ‘t know the names these ties but go on the visual effect

not too bold but interesting for just one rope length.There feels as something is incomplete with this tie as it goes around the waist with no beginning nor end. Is there ever?

we tried on the different clothes again. Someone had given me this headdress awhile ago but never found the opportunity I think it works here.

We talked during the shoot to loose the Voyeuristic quality of the moments and to become human beings and not objects. I guess Zi would be called a ‘rope bunny’ which is what women are called who enjoy the freedom of being bound.

Zi has a boyfriend and a different rope play partner/rigger receiving different needs from both. Working with these women is so insightful for me from the first woman who said she enjoyed being tied up. That surprised me somewhat as we had never talked about that before. But the more I learn the more I know.

That there is a freedom and delicacy in not being in charge. Hell I get that feeling of not being in charge when ever I go to work at the Beacon as soon as I leave the house.

At some point in time I accidentally moved the sync shutter speed out of sync with the flash units, going up to 250 from Canon 200. Check, check, check remember to take off lens cap.Check shutter speeds.

As you can see here the right side of the above picture is dark because stupid me didn’t check the shutter speed as I had moved it off the sync speed. Imagine my chagrin when looking at them in bridge.Sometimes I shoot bigger thinking I will crop latter but then I get so involved I forget, oops.So a few didn’t make the HD.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you loose. What I was trying to do here is show off this lovely woman who had worked so hard for me.

It wasn’t an unproductive afternoon for neither of us. I learned an important part of photography check, check, check everything. I always say it not quantity but quality

Things highly productive people do, well not me i am special, i am an artist

Here are some tips for staying productive:
1.    Work backwards from goals to milestones to tasks. Writing “launch company website” at the top of your to-do list is a sure way to make sure you never get it done. Break down the work into smaller and smaller chunks until you have specific tasks that can be accomplished in a few hours or less: Sketch a wireframe, outline an introduction for the homepage video, etc. That’s how you set goals and actually succeed in crossing them off your list.
2.    Stop multi-tasking. No, seriously—stop. Switching from task to task quickly does not work. In fact, changing tasks more than 10 times in a day makes you dumber than being stoned. When you’re stoned, your IQ drops by five points. When you multitask, it drops by an average of 10 points, 15 for men, five for women (yes, men are three times as bad at multitasking than women).
3.    Be militant about eliminating distractions. Lock your door, put a sign up, turn off your phone, texts, email, and instant messaging. In fact, if you know you may sneak a peek at your email, set it to offline mode, or even turn off your Internet connection. Go to a quiet area and focus on completing one task.
4.    Schedule your email. Pick two or three times during the day when you’re going to use your email. Checking your email constantly throughout the day creates a ton of noise and kills your productivity.
5.    Use the phone. Email isn’t meant for conversations. Don’t reply more than twice to an email. Pick up the phone instead.
6.    Work on your own agenda. Don’t let something else set your day. Most people go right to their emails and start freaking out. You will end up at inbox-zero, but accomplish nothing. After you wake up, drink water so you rehydrate, eat a good breakfast to replenish your glucose, then set prioritized goals for the rest of your day.
7.    Work in 60 to 90 minute intervals. Your brain uses up more glucose than any other bodily activity. Typically you will have spent most of it after 60-90 minutes. (That’s why you feel so burned out after super long meetings.) So take a break: Get up, go for a walk, have a snack, do something completely different to recharge. And yes, that means you need an extra hour for breaks, not including lunch, so if you’re required to get eight hours of work done each day, plan to be there for 9.5-10 hours.

all worth while ways of keeping on track and getting things done. i must admit i am pretty good a getting things done maybe not as organized as this list. no i don’t text people, why do they text me when i say call? i might be living in the wrong world or time frame. oh well

i do keep on track with to do list the only way that  keeps me focused and deadlines have worked pretty good for me.  am preparing to go off to Hawaii for a couple of weeks with my honey. the house is a mess clothes thrown in piles almost read to get rolled into suitcase but first i had to make fast the apartment  from the ‘Hell’s Kitchen burglar.’

that took most of the day although is seemed a simple task but……. you know how it is.  clearing calendar so i can come back clear nothing on my mind except pleasure, woohoo

yesterday i finished up giving a model whom i posted here before some selects, he gets to chose the ones he wants. i’ll never figure out what they are looking for, yes he’s seen my quick picks but they always go for ones i never though of, as is this image he picked. ugh

this was my stupid photographic choice of the day, this background, oh that’s mary’s hand down in the corner. ‘Why this one,’ i said. ‘i like the way my body is’ he replied.

i couldn’t let this pic leave the house, not looking like this and having my name on it. so through the magic of photoshop i added a few things the camera hadn’t caught. i know everyone says capture it in camera but sometimes i am too dumb.

is it perfect, not really but better than the one he wanted. i turned towards him a said ‘what about this one?’ his reaction was  ‘ i can’t believe the difference.’ so there’s no truth in what i do, but as i say on my model mayhem page, ‘ I use a camera as I would a pencil or brush, photography is just a tool.’

i didn’t spend all those hours at ICP daydreaming in Photoshop II class. so here you have some of my secrets, how i am special and make others special to. it may not be productive but i’ve learned early in life to just keep at it. perseverance is one of the keys to life that makes up the song.

PINA the movie in 3D by wim wenders at BAM

last night in the rain we drove out to brooklyn BAM to see PINA

the Wim Wenders 3D film on Pina Bausch work with Tanztheater Wuppertal. I’ve had the extreme pleasure of seeing the company perform at BAM during the Next Wave festival . My first ever experience seeing Pina’s work  was the Rite of Spring at BAM which blew me away.

at that time i was working with Ralph Holmes on Guiding Light for Procter & Gamble on CBS. Ralph lit Dance In America for PBS for years and was considered the preeminent  television dance Lighting Director. oh did i say we share an Emmy together. not to take anything away from Jennifer Tipton whom i also worked with, nor any of the other designers who worked on this series

I would tell him about the company, actually rave about the company and Next Wave to him. he would smile nod his head in acknowledgment of our shared love of dance and go about his work. he was a wonderful teacher and i sought his guidance, as we shared sets going from his studio to mine as to how he lit it to keep the show consistent.

but i digress from lasts night experience. I had apprehensions about seeing a 3D movie which i hadn’t seen since i was a kid remembering , PHANTOM IN THE RUE MORGUE  in 3D with heads flying, corpses falling in ones lap.but we were quite surprised at the intimacy the 3D achieved with  dance.

the movie starts i think with Rite of Spring after a few spoken words (see link for short opening sequence.) and it just doesn’t stop going from one piece to another interspaced between with dancer reminiscences of Pina, how she communicated with them.

what struck me was the phrase ‘when words end, DANCE’ or something like that. another piece in the film was Cafe Muller which again on seeing it at BAM left me speech less. so simple yet complex what did i think and i didn’t have a ready answer. dance theater that made you think. whoa nellie.

don’t know  if you can tell how much i love dance, as a child i would dance in front of our stand up radio in the living room when no one else was around and i loved the Fred Astair or Gene Kelly like ‘Singing In The Rain’ type movies it looked like so much fun. but i was buried in Schenectady with very little chance of breaking out, besides i was pretty young and wet behind the ears to wander world.

another Pina dance featured in the movie was Vollmond ( full Moon). Pina’s work is so sensual and the film captures that sensuality. the one disturbing aspect of the 3D technique is a slight loss of sharpness. after all you’re wearing these ill fitting glasses  and it distracts a bit from the total presentations but not enough to keep people out of the theater.

This movie is playing 4 times a day through Monday 1/2

and 3 times Tuesday 1/3 through Thursday 1/5 at the BAM Rose Cinema  $15 general admission but worth the price.

Musée de l’Elysée suspends Prize in wake of censorship of Palestinian artist

Introduced in 2010 to support young photographers, the prestigious €25,000 Lacoste Elysée Prize is awarded by the Swiss Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne Switzerland, with sponsorship from Lacoste, the clothing brand.

The Musée de l’Elysée has decided to suspend the organisation of the Lacoste Elysée Prize 2011 in response to the decision of the organizers to exclude the work of Palestinian artist Larissa Sansour’s work.

Sansour was among eight finalists shortlisted for the 2011 prize

Eight nominees for the 2011 prize were selected to take part in the contest, and asked to produce three photographs on the theme la joie de vivre.

With the help of a grant of €4,000, each nominee had “carte blanche” to interpret the theme how they saw fit, whether directly or indirectly. The nominees were free to make a submission based upon their existing work or as an entirely new project.

An expert jury was scheduled to meet at the end of January 2012 to select the winner of the Lacoste Elysée Prize 2011.

Larissa Sansour was among the eight artists shortlisted for the 2011 prize. In December 2011, sponsor Lacoste demanded that Sansour’s nomination be revoked. Lacoste stated their refusal to support Sansour’s work, describing it as “too pro-Palestinian.”

In November 2011, three photos from Sansour’s ‘Nation Estate’ project were accepted, and she was congratulated by the prize administrators for her work and professionalism. Sansour’s name was subsequently included in all literature relating to the prize and on the website as an official nominee. Her name has since been removed, however, and her project was withdrawn from an upcoming issue of contemporary art magazine ArtReview introducing the nominated artists.

Sansour was asked to approve a statement saying that she voluntarily withdrew her nomination “in order to pursue other opportunities.” Sansour refused to agree to such a statement.

Sansour says, “I am very sad and shocked by this development. This year Palestine was officially admitted to UNESCO, yet we are still being silenced. As a politically involved artist I am no stranger to opposition, but never before have I been censored by the very same people who nominated me in the first place. Lacoste’s prejudice and censorship puts a major dent in the idea of corporate involvement in the arts. It is deeply worrying.”

Sansour’s multimedia project ‘Nation Estate’ was “conceived in the wake of the Palestinian bid for UN membership. Nation Estate depicts a science fiction-style Palestinian state in the form of a single skyscraper housing the entire Palestinian population. Inside this new Nation Estate, the residents have recreated their lost cities on separate floors: Jerusalem on 3, Ramallah on 4, Sansour’s own hometown of Bethlehem on 5, etc.

Sansour’s shortlisted work, ‘Nation Estate,’ conceived in the wake of the Palestinian bid for UN membership, is a multimedia science fiction project that imagines a future Palestinian state in the form of a skyscraper. The single skyscraper houses the entire Palestinian population, with residents recreating their lost cities on separate floors.

Sansour from Bethlehem is a prominent Palestinian artist and filmmaker. Her most recent film, ‘A Space Exodus,’ was nominated for the short-film category at the Dubai International Film Festival

The Musée de l’Elysée has announced its suspension of the 2011 Prize and has offered to exhibit ‘Nation Estate’ outside the framework of the prize and Lacoste’s sponsorship.

this is a crazy city : N.Y. artist can paint nude models only after dark

NEW YORK (Reuters) – An artist arrested for applying body paint to a nude model in New York’s Times Square will have charges against him dropped if his models strip naked only after dark, according to a court agreement reached on Thursday.

Police arrested Andy Golub, 45, in July and charged him with violating public exposure and lewdness laws. He has been painting nude models for about three years.

Golub’s lawyer, Ronald Kuby, argued that New York laws do not prohibit public nudity in the name of art, and a compromise was reached that was the basis of the court ruling.

Under the agreement, “he is permitted to paint bare breasts any time, anywhere, but the G-strings have to stay on until daylight goes out,” Kuby said after a hearing in Manhattan criminal court.

State laws against public exposure exempt “any person entertaining or performing in a play, exhibition, show or entertainment,” Kuby said. Municipalities are allowed to devise their own restrictions, but New York City generally does not do so, Kuby said.

Golub, of Nyack, New York, said he likes to paint nude models because their bodies have energy and dynamism that he finds lacking in canvas.

“I feel that when I do live body painting it’s a good thing, a positive thing,” he said.

Charges against Golub will be dropped in six months if he abides by the terms of the agreement and is not arrested again. Charges against Karla Storie, a model from Texas arrested with him, will be dismissed if she too is not arrested again in the next six months.

Golub said he was planning to return to criminal court on Friday and paint a nude model in a park near the courthouse.
