Grey day play

December 12, 2016

Be forewarned there is female nudity here so if it offends you leave before viewing.

The other day a traveling model from Model mayhem recontacted me about shooting together and this has been a slow month maybe even longer than a month since shooting and I liked a couple of her portfolio pictures and I though, why not? I just had a cancelation on another shoot and I was ready. I do get excited about shoots even a headshot, my wife describes this as nervous but I think of it as anticipation which I think we artists all share. Will I be good enough, will what ever I am planing work, will people laugh at me? They have. Taking photos isn’t a life and death situation unless it is.

As you can read latter in this post how I screwed up during this session. Oh well.

Zi rang my bell 7 minutes before the arranged time, that’s a positive sign which means she’s professional and a smart lady even caught some type o’s in my model release, cool. We talked about makeup well lipstick color which she applied while I pulled down the paper. Then we looked through some clothes I had and made a pile to try.

Beginning with this jacket I don’t remember having, it’s nice to discover something new. I really didn’t need to direct her because she would go from pose after hearing the click of the shutter. I see I should have fixed her face as it looks rough in this pose. I do try and make women look nice, must be something I got from my mother.

Since the lighting is mostly set up I usually turn on and turn off units as needed. Which gets boring and I keep telling myself I need to  get out of this rut. But here I go again.

I don’t think she ever said no to anything I suggested. A lovely pleasant young woman easy to work with.

She did most of the work all I did was plug and unplug things and push the shutter. She had some Shibari rope work in her portfolio and I had asked her if she was up for it. ‘Sure’. She has her own rigger which is a bit intimidating to me the beginner.

This is what I came up with her. I’ve always wanted to do a braided tie like this, I don ‘t know the names these ties but go on the visual effect

not too bold but interesting for just one rope length. There feels as something is incomplete with this tie as it goes around the waist with no beginning nor end. Is there ever?

we tried on the different clothes again. Someone had given me this headdress awhile ago but never found the opportunity I think it works here.

We talked during the shoot to loose the Voyeuristic quality of the moments and to become human beings and not objects. I guess Zi would be called a ‘rope bunny’ which is what women are called who enjoy the freedom of being bound.

Zi has a boyfriend and a different rope play partner/rigger receiving different needs from both. Working with these women is so insightful for me from the first woman who said she enjoyed being tied up. That surprised me somewhat as we had never talked about that before. But the more I learn the more I know.

That there is a freedom and delicacy in not being in charge. Hell I get that feeling of not being in charge when ever I go to work at the Beacon as soon as I leave the house.

At some point in time I accidentally moved the sync shutter speed out of sync with the flash units, going up to 250 from Canon 200. Check, check, check remember to take off lens cap.Check shutter speeds.

As you can see here the right side of the above picture is dark because stupid me didn’t check the shutter speed as I had moved it off the sync speed. Imagine my chagrin when looking at them in bridge.Sometimes I shoot bigger thinking I will crop latter but then I get so involved I forget, oops.So a few didn’t make the HD.

This one only the chair is darker so no big deal

But most of this series on the rug is trash as you can see below.Ugh

I am glad someone wasn’t paying me for this shoot. All though I did pull something out of this but nothing is perfect. Oh well.

These below I managed to save  because of cropping

Sometimes you win, sometimes you loose. What I was trying to do here is show off this lovely woman who had worked so hard for me.

It wasn’t an unproductive afternoon for neither of us. I learned an important part of photography check, check, check everything. I always say it not quantity but quality

so if I only get a few pictures I can use fine. This afternoon I connected with another human being and made a few enjoyable pictures. _mg_3619

So this is all I have to share today. I hope my few readers enjoy my efforts. At least two of us walked away with something we came for. Then as planned I took a nap.

New work, male nude, ode to old master painters.

June 28, 2015

Yes as it says i went back in the studio after meeting this fellow you never know what’s going to happen , at least i don’t. i am sure there are a million togs out there who know everything about their camera settings and what adjustments will effect what and how so. me it’s a crap shoot.

I do know lighting so that is a plus and just learning model direction but i am still shy about that, why? –  guess it was the way i was raised. Not to say i haven’t learned a few things pushing the shutter button as often as i have. i am not stupid, i just act that way sometimes.

Warning there is male nudity here which might be offensive to some while others might be looking for it.

I hope my readers aren’t offended by this but this is what i seem to do best, studio lighting, just learning other stuff.

While the model was willing to pose naked he wasn’t that interested in have his name or face posted on the internet which isn’t a problem for me.

male nude sitting

male nude sitting

so i began to feature his hands because most people don’t know what to do with them during a photography session so why not begin there. he’s not an experienced model just has a nice body. Looking through the images these reminded me of some of the landscape images i got in Antelope Valley slot canyons see my photo shelter web site

hands on knees

hands on knees

Because of the time of day and the heat temperature in studio i shot these using my White lightning strobes, this image is just one downlight.

male midsection

male nude torso

below is one of the images he thinks is beautiful. yes it does show his body which is what he was interested in doing.

male nude torso

male nude torso

now these are just quick picks of the raw files nothing much done to them, made some levels adjustments. i get tired of shooting the same things over and over so i move on. I showed a print of another fellow i shot years ago. he liked it so i dug around pulling out a piece of wrinkled fabric, here thry this on.

draped nude male

‘what do i do?’  he asked. just move around feel the fabric i answered.

male nude torso

you can see he has a nice body and deep set eyes which worked for me and my lighting style. i decided to try something different since this black fabric poked out when pulling the other fabric from the box.

what a line huh? I always tell people i don’t need a hundred images just one or two, well here is one. below is anoher untouched image i’ll work on.

again the movement wasn’t working as well as i wanted so we sat down on the floor.

i like the first one better

I will end this post with my all time favorite image not to say the other images aren’t good and all my little darlings this one was developed in camera as i knew what I was going for.

1st image

1st image is the keeper. My Caravaggio, see his work here or it could be a Rembrandt van Rijn here

_MG_1020 copy

Both of whom we have seen as paintings in person while traveling in Europe. the above image reminds me of one of Rembrandt’s self portraits.

These paintings Rembrandt’s and Caravaggio’s are so awe inspiring to me which i’ve always had a hard time thinking my work might be. but at this point in my life maybe i can hit one out every once in a while.

old work revisited or catching up with sending photos

November 18, 2011

today i’ve a cold and still feeling lousy and my typing hasn’t improved either. but i am trying to catch up on work, yea i call this work some might think it’s fun sitting here in front of a computer screen where the day goes by so quickly. did i eat today, what time is it? opps

life could be worst as i am wondering what to do about all the spam comments i am getting here. i did like one from a learn at home belly dancing course. here are some quotes

1) Vary your speed – slow, medium, or fast
2) Vary the intensity of your energy – soft or hard
3) Vary the number of times you work each side of the body
4) Change the direction you are facing
5) Change your level by raising or lowering your body
6) Do your move standing pivoting, or traveling
7) Change the direction of your move

is it me or does this sound like SEX? speaking of sexy or nudes not sure they are all sexy especially after looking at model mayhem daily photo contest i’ve reworked some images to send to waiting models only today i converted them to B&W’s silly me.

female nude

but the model who i was sending the images is a male who was part of this session so i’ll try and concentrate on that task

i was trying to work with a theme here of non-communication using the black rubber gloves as a barrier to actual touching

 or this attitude

is something touching me

i think she was a good sport, although she was paid she really didn’t understand what i am looking for but gave what she could.

the male didn’t feel too comfortable here either or inexperienced. this was everybody’s first time working together maybe i should have been more active in my direction, oh well

remove shroud

overall i think i got some nice images although the female model didn’t want any of the images for her portfolio, can’t please everyone.

well at least i can cross this off the list. the male model sent me an email looking for work for himself and another female in fine art or erotica. hum i wonder what people will think of this work’s category erotic/fine art? i’ve my own opinion but hey who am i?

if any readers are interested in working with me do get in contact with me through my web site. i only publish work here of paid models not some of my paid work which is private unless i am given permission.

another snow storm or how do i stay warm in my undies?

February 21, 2011

sometimes being me is very difficult, it seems i cause more trouble for myself than i avoid. but hey from here i guess i should be more thankful than i give myself credit for. so pat myself on the back even through i don’t always feel i deserve it, i can poke some holes in the clouds and begin to see the ever-present sunshine.

last night could have been a personal disaster but it wasn’t. my car died at the garage entrance, it could have given out on the dark cold west side highway with a snow storm intimate but it got me home once more. in the twenty some odd years she’s been pretty good to me. i need to remind myself that as a crawl over and under her fixing this and that.

so i woke up this morning picked out the couple metal splinters from my fingertips just to make typing interesting, and began working on some images i shot last week. not before i let my mind wander on to another creative video project i’d like to begin about transformations. but leave that for another time.

i put on a Beach Boy album Smile and distracted myself to look away from all the bad images i shot and see some of the good ones. i am trying to do a lingerie portfolio thinking that might generate some income on my web site i am tired of laying out money for something that isn’t returning anything. so trying to make a cross over from pure artist to a commercial artist. yes i still enjoy creating even if it’s only working on one of our cars , we have three.

so i’ll post some of aubrey today. she’s an art model very comfortable nude in front of the camera or in her edwardian corsets.

female wearing edwardian corset

female wearing edwardian corset

i tried to do two different lighting setups, one a tungsten set up which i wasn’t happy with and this one which is a strobe setup.

female wearing red bra & panties

this is the tungsten setup which i didn’t get much out of, i guess it’s all a learning experience but as Joe McNally said the other day he gets a lot of throw aways also.

black bow on red bra

black bow on red bra

i wanted to do more of these closeups but i had shaky hands or slow iso and something didn’t quite work out

red bra, panties & black stockings

red bra, panties & black stockings

but i think for my purposes i did ok, i am not going to win many awards with these images but hopefully get some paying work

black garter belt and black panties

black garter belt and black panties

i guess i don’t need hundreds of images to get my point across. if someone is thinking about having their picture taken for their boyfriend or business these might get their imagination going.

black bra & panties with pink details

black bra & panties with pink details

black bra & panties with pink details & black stockings

so we wind up where we began in a corset on the couch. when i do a lighting setup i really do better if i listen to my body and just do it. that happened with the bluish-green light on the background, of course i had to have the makings handy so being prepared is a big part of it.

classic art model pose

classic art model pose

so now i can end this posting and begin the real work ahead think about dinner and the lovely wife i left in a nice warm bed last night to come back to this cold studio. i wonder about my sanity sometimes.

show me some leg

show me some leg

but this is one of my chosen occupations, i am not sure if i chose lighting or it chose me having an elevated uranus and neptune. oh well some things can never be answered.

just grin and bear it.

My life as a photography subject. who needs photo salon?

November 17, 2010

i’ve been asking a member of photo salon held each 3rd wed at soho photo to show my work there to the members who are mostly commercial photog’s and have been ignored by emmanuel on each request.

photo salon is the playground of The Photogroup Salon Committee
Jay Maisel, Howard Schatz, Bill Westheimer, Jack Reznicki, David Hodgson, Rich Pomerantz, Emmanuel Faure all of whom are excellent photog’s in their own right, they started photo salon to show their work to friends and family, but have expanded to show others as well.

i am the type of person who takes these things personally; rejections, acceptances, awards etc but try and put on a humble public face. yes it does hurt not to be accepted no matter where from the playground as children to the workplace.

it’s true i didn’t voter for myself during voting for my first emmy back in 1985. i thought that it wasn’t right to vote for yourself, of course i was lucky others voted me a winner. where did i get these cockamamie ideas? the next year of my second nomination i did vote for myself and won again. but that’s neither here nor there.

Philip F Clark writes in his The Artpoint blog about the painter Max Rodriguez that he ‘understands that art is an act of freedom.’ well so do i and others have that same right.

reflections-inspired by jay maisel

but looking at my work now, maybe they are right that i don’t fit the groups esthetic nor commercial aspect.

man on the stairs

after all my work is really just a snap shot of my life. i can’t take pictures of someplace i’ve not been to. it’s a real chore keeping up with my life photography and trying to run an informative blog such as this, but what the hell else do i have to do during the daytime? so these images are a part of my life where i’ve been

metal door

but my life isn’t something i do for others pleasure, I DO IT FOR ME. i love to share my occurences and discoveries with others, how i see things

or what i don’t see but am there anyways. so i’ve come to the same conclusion that groucho marx came to, of not wanting to belong to any club who would have me.

man with cell phone

so i’ll just continue doing what i do, wandering around the city taking pictures as  photographers have done since the invention of photography or maybe i’ll go below and see what there is to see.

hatchway door handle

moving down deeper into the innards of life, as was shared by a teacher of mine’ Self discovery isn’t always good news’

ship walls

engine room

until we get to the proverbial locked door, do we have what it takes to open the door and see what’s behind it?

chained door

oh well so photo salon won’t let me be a part of them. i’ll just have to continue doing what i do and they will be the lesser for it. i know i am loved and a fairly talented guy who’s just doing this because i love to make pictures. this is my life. thank you for sharing in it.

International Aperture Award 2010, bronze award in landscape

November 12, 2010

i was going to try and finish up the california trip today having caught up with posting expenses etc, cleaned my kitchen yesterday washed the window always a hard job because the window has an exhaust fan in it that gets the window screen greasy so ammonia has to be used. the one positive effect of cleaning with ammonia is i can breathe easier now. but that’s why i left the chemical darkroom the smell of the fixer.ugh

but reading my email this morning i had some pleasant news from the International Aperture Awards

Aperture Award announcement

pretty cool huh? i love this image maybe because i know the story of when and where. it was taken on RT 7 in Vermont during the time i was showing mary around where i grew up and where my family was from. We had an exhibit in Burlington and decided to drive up there to deliver the prints and stay for the opening.

this picture looks across farmland in front of Lake Champlain [not seen] toward the mountains of new york state in the background. mary stopped the car and pulled over and i took a couple of exposures. i loved the lone tree and the rays of lighting. it reminds me of how i’ve felt most of my life, me against the world.

this is the same trip where i asked mary if she would be my wife. life has changed for me now, i don’t feel as if i am alone in this world. even if i’d not asked and mary accepted my proposal did i feel the same old negative feelings of being alone. i had mary in my life but i wanted to make a statement, to whom i am not sure, the world? how i felt about her and what she really meant to me.

having her in ones corner is a real asset because once she makes up her mind, she’s there. so maybe this tree symbolizes mary and not me. i have to remember life isn’t all about me nor are the pictures. they actually present themselves to the world for all to see and if i am lucky enough to be there and capture the moment with my brownie i have a way of remembering and sharing that moment of beauty with others.

just like now, being married to mary, we both have the legal & moral right to share and enjoy our work together. my life has improved so much after meeting her, being open with her is something i highly recommend as  is having love in ones life. it does open new vistas and opportunities. but don’t get any funny ideas as she is taken and we don’t share well with strangers.

so any award i win we both win as she is a part of what and where i do life along with how open my eyes and ears are. having a life and sharing it is a wonderful thing, i highly recommend it.

so maybe you can think of ways you can share your life and the wonders that befall you, or just turn to the stranger next to you and say hello. it does make a difference.

The Robert Cornelius Portrait Award….. nomination…. woo pee……

September 28, 2010

late last night  i received this email, i was tired been working all day on the ‘rainy monday morning’ post and it was amongst all the other emails that fill my inbox.  i always like to see if there are links to others work, i am very confused by what work is selected by whom, it’s all a crap shoot and so many contest i enter i never hear from. what would camera Obscura be looking for but i entered two images in their contest thinking  my stuff can be pretty obscure.

but every once in awhile some pretty prestigious award or honorable mention comes my way. last year it was International Photography Award and Prix de la Photographie, Paris (PX3) which are pretty cool which another photographer reminded me ain’t chopped liver.

rainy monday mornings work, Aubrey in corsets

September 27, 2010

this past sunday i worked with a young woman model named aubrey doing an Edwardian corseted shoot. i’d been toying with the idea of using a mirror i’d found on the street years ago which had some damage which i thought would be easily fixable, i was right and can’t notice the repair, even my critical eye.

the last female nude shoot with keira grant i did was to complete my adam and eve series but in thinking about it, while i got some good single nudes what i really need are  images of them together which seems harder than i thought it would be to find the right couple. so i moved on to panama project which is still very much in the works and forgot about nudes for a while.

i found aubrey through and adv in manhattan figure study group, a group i’d left along time ago because i would light something and people would take pictures and post then on the internet as their work, yes they did push the shutter so it was their picture but i never got credit for lighting it. i don’t mind teaching people how to, which is what i use this blog for but these are my images and i mark and copyright them as such.

aubrey intrigued me with the offer of having edwardian corset props. i wondered how i’d look in one but we are different sizes. but  letting my imagination run free anyways i remembered the mirror so i contacted her. she was excited about the idea as well so when she had some free time we booked it for sunday afternoon. mary was able help set up the studio beforehand but had to leave due to prior commitment.

the set up consisted mostly of blacking out the room as i had figured the lighting positions beforehand, three lights – one with a softbox strip over the mirror and one from each side. simple.

although in this image there are only two lights being used due to my fooling around with them, but it worked out because the back light also lights her face due to reflection in mirror.

female nude with white edwardian corset

i’ve decided to start taking head shots of all my models because a lot of people are looking for the perfect photographer to capture their images, make to make themselves a star and why not? we are all here together.

this is an un-retouched image straight from the camera, nice to have great skin.i am a master of finding ugly angles but having young models helps.

female nude with curtain & mirror

this was the big set up even for the head shots, i wanted to try and get the curtain pattern projected on her body but it didn’t work here. i’ve done this on movies and television but would have taken more hands than i had. so do the shot and move on.

female nude wearing white corset

i think we got some nice images out of this afternoon, btw it does take a lot of time getting into and out of these things as they lace up.

but i do think the afternoon was well worth the effort although i didn’t have to get in and out of those corsets

but then i said gee i’ve got this study i am finding it hard to find people to work on which is about peoples ability to be able to touch each other both physically and mentally which these

this one below is one of my favorites as everything lines up nicely. of course we changed the set up somewhat and got all  the lighting working for this shot.

but there are a lot more images, it’s just i am tired of working on computer. it must be lunch time, what i missed lunch again and it’s now dinner? now i know where my life goes, down some pixel hole working to blind the photographer. do you know there are a group of blind photographers working?

i’ve got to do something about my web presence these half measures aren’t cutting it. well it’s suppose to rain again tomorrow.
